I will use the game LoL to illustrate that games have the ability to impart useful cognitive, social and physical capacities. As such I will be focusing my argument around one specific genre of video game, namely MOBAs. I believe that video games, like sports and literature, are incredibly multifaceted making relevant analysis across the whole genre nearly impossible. In this essay, I argue in favour of the pedagogical power of video games. Could we all be further ahead in our studies/careers were it not for LoL?
I personally know students, bankers, lawyers and even doctors who all enjoy playing the game and have done so for years. Can these 27 million active monthly users all fit the previously portrayed gamer stereotype?Īs a 26-year-old player myself, with numerous friends also playing the game I know this to be far from the case. In short, LoL is now the world’s most popular video game and a global phenomenon. This figure is staggering, more than the total population of the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland combined playing a video game every month. Since then the player base has continued to expand and Forbes magazine estimated that by December 2016 LoL hit 100 million active monthly users (Forbes, 2016). In 2014 Riot Games published statistics showing that their popular MOBA (multiplayer Online Battle Arena Game) ‘League of Legends’ (LoL) had a player base of more than 67 million active players and 27 million active daily players (Riot Games, 2012). I have probably spent more time playing video games than rock climbing yet I feel compelled to hide this as an area of interest from any prospective employer. I would never dream of listing gaming on their CV alongside other individual interests such as sports, artistic pursuits or academic inclinations. Gamers, like myself, experience this stigma whenever asked about our hobbies.
The rhetoric goes, video gamers are attempting to escape the realities of everyday life and losing touch with reality. Accompanying this stigma is the persistent fallacy that gaming is above all, a waste of precious time. Gaming (for some) has subsumed all their personal social relations and physical activities. According to mainstream media, gaming is viewed as an activity for loners gamers are associated with a certain physique and social ineptitude. Video games as a media genre have long had a certain stigma attached to their use.
